Fitness Model Interview:

Bethany Howlett

The Interview:

1. What's your background? How did you get started in the fitness industry?

I was an elite level gymnast for thirteen years, a national level cheerleader for eight years, as well as a dancer of all sorts. I began weight lifting my freshman year at UVA and have remained with it ever since.

2. What do you feel is your biggest fitness-related accomplishment?

Earning my professional status, placing in the top ten of my professional debut, owning my three gyms and a successful personal training business as well as the 2001 Fitness Web site of the Year: www.bethanyhowlett.com

3. Is fitness modeling/competition your full-time job? If not, what else do you do?

Not if I plan on eating :) ....There is not a lot of money to be made off of modeling and competing alone, plus the use of an education of some level is a must in the successful working world indeed. One can use fitness to spin off of thus compete for fun but have some gyms, personal train, etc... My full time job right now is the gyms, personal training business, my own clients, and I start a PhD next year.

4. What are your immediate and long-term goals?

Have successful gyms, keep my Web site up, start my PhD, and place top ten in all seven shows this year, as well as put together a great demo of my singing --- I sing professional opera and jazz --- for short term goals. Long term includes finishing a PhD, finishing law school, and working in the pharmaceutical patenting field.

5. Please describe a typical day for you. What is your daily routine like?

CRAZY!!!!!!!! Up at 5AM to make food for the day, 6-8 AM train clients, 830-1030 AM train myself, 1030-1230 is full of faxes, business calls, emails, post office, bank, etc., 1230-130 PM more clients, 130-230 PM is voice lessons, 300-400 PM is train again -- gymnastics, 4-8 PM is more clients, 830-1030 PM is more training, 11-1 AM is more emails, shower, ready for bed---4 hours of sleep only.

6. Please describe your normal diet. How do you eat to stay in shape?

High protein, low carb, and minimal fat.

7. What is your training routine like?

I train seven days per week, two to three times per day. I use high reps, lighter weight, and lots of intensity. Cardio comes in all forms and is plentiful at best. Gymnastics, stretching, and sprints work well also.

8. What supplements do you use?

I use protein powder, vitamins, minerals, BCAAs, FFAAs, glutamine, vitamin C, vitamin E, Hydroxycut, Xenadrine, L-carnitine, Usnic Acid, aspirin, etc.

9. How do you motivate yourself to get/stay in shape?

I have faith in myself to the fullest. I am my own motivation.

10. What are a few of your favorite fitness and health-related web sites?

www.promuscleonline.com
www.muscle-fitnesshers.com
www.muscle-fitness.com
www.flexonline.com

11. What tips would you give to someone who wanted to get into the fitness modeling (or fitness competition) industry?

Mail professional portfolios to all major publishers, editors, writers, photographers, etc. Call them, fly there to see them, etc. Let them know that you are here and serious.

12. If someone you knew asked you how to lose weight and get into shape quickly, what would you tell them?

First thing would be to up the cardio amount and get on a low fat, minimal carb, higher protein diet --- train with weights at a faster pace with lots of intensity and lots of reps, and lower weight.

13. What do you feel differentiates you from other people in your field?

My work ethic in and out of the work place, my education level, my drive to be and have only the best. I do a lot of things outside of fitness which keeps me balanced --- most people in the sport lack a balance of the fine arts, the academics, the spiritual being, and the athleticism.
