Fitness Model Interview:

Mary Dusang

The Interview:

1. What's your background? How did you get started in the fitness industry?

I started working out when i went to college to fight the freshman 15. I was always active in high school, cheerleading and track. When i started college i needed an outlet so i started working out and loved it. I took what i had learned in the gym and got certified and started personal training @ several the gyms in my home town for about 7 years. I then decided i was tired of working in the gym b/c it really hinders your own training. So i started working for my dads company i love it b/c i am on a schedule. I have always wanted to compete but time & money wouldn't allow it. I started dating and married Scott Dusang who is a personal trainer and he convinced me to go for it. Also a very good friend of mine Michelle Marciancte had competed in 2000 and after that i was like i can do this.

2. What do you feel is your biggest fitness-related accomplishment?

I have several big accomplishments i would like to list:

- Winning the Tall and overall fitness division @ the Southern US Fitness Championship and 3rd in the figure division

- Placing 3rd in the figure division at the Greater Gulf States Championship

- Placing in top 20 in the tall class at National s in Atlanta

All of this in 2001

But my greatest accomplishment was being featured in the June 2001 Flex-n-Femm section of FLEX magazine...that was a dream come true!

3. Is fitness modeling/competition your full-time job? If not, what else do you do?

I have not done any fitness modeling and competing is not my full time job it is really just a hobby for me. I am an administrative asst. @ a brokerage firm. I do not have a website at this time.

4. What are your immediate and long-term goals?

My goals are just to compete & try to improve my placing. I took off the 2002 season for personal reasons but I plan on competing in 2003

5. Please describe a typical day for you. What is your daily routine like?

A typical day in the off season for me is basically work 8-5, workout @ 5 and then do 45 min. of cardio. If i am getting ready for a show i get up at 5am and do 45 min. cardio, work 8-5, workout @ 5 and 45min more cardio, tan, go home, cook dinner and all my meals for the next day, and then straight to bed at 10pm.

6. Please describe your normal diet. How do you eat to stay in shape?

Normal diet is 5-6 meals a day low carb, high protein and cheat on the weekends

Competition diet is:

Cardio @ 5am
6am protein drink
8:30-9:00 1/2 cup oatmeal w/ protein drink
11:30-12:00 chicken breast w/ veggies or tuna
3:30-4:00 protein drink
5-7 workout & cardio
7pm protein drink
9pm 8-7 egg whites 1 yolk

Tues: cardio & tan
Wed: Legs
Thurs: gymnastics and strength training
Friday: Biceps & Triceps

I do not train chest at all and Sat. i work on my routine.

8. What supplements do you use?

Supplements i take are glutamine, cla and multivitamins.

9. How do you motivate yourself to get/stay in shape?

I don't really find it hard to stay motivated. I really enjoy working out. I read Oxygen mag. Flex, and Muscle & Fitness but I don't really need anything to motivate me.

10. What are a few of your favorite fitness and health-related web sites?

My favorite websites are Genex9.com and getbig.com.

11. What tips would you give to someone who wanted to get into the fitness modeling (or fitness competition) industry?

Find out which organization you want to compete in 1st b/c there are several ones out there. Then go to some local shows so you can get an idea of what they do. get a trainer who has experience w/ training for competition and talk to the promoters of the shows b/c they can get you in touch w/ people that can help in other ways, costumes and so forth.

12. If someone you knew asked you how to lose weight and get into shape quickly, what would you tell them?

1st i would say there is no quick way to lose weight. Then set a goal or time frame that you need to be in shape by. have your measurements taken (body fat and weight) to asses how much you need to lose b/c you might think 20lbs. when it might really be 10-15lbs. and have a trainer set you up on a program that will meet these needs.

13. What do you feel differentiates you from other people in your field?

I don't really that there is much difference between anyone who competes. we are all after the same thing - to either win or get coverage.
