Fitness Model Interview:

Sarah Malone

Interview Questions:

1. What’s your background? How did you get started in the fitness modeling/fitness competition field?

I got started in the fitness industry by going into business with my husband. We own several Max Muscle stores. I am also a personal trainer.

2. What do you feel is your biggest fitness-related accomplishment?

I feel my biggest fitness related accomplishment was when I lost 35 pounds. I went from a size 12/14 down to a size 0. And have maintained that for almost four years now.

3. Is fitness modeling/competition your full-time job? If not, what else do you do?

No, fitness modeling is not my full time job. As I mentioned prior, I also own several Max Muscle stores. We help others attain their goals. Anything from weight loss to muscle gain. We put together nutrition programs and incorporate products such as protein powders, amino acids, and thermogenics.

4. What are your immediate and long-term goals?

My immediate goals are to continue to improve my physique. My long-term goals are to become a professional IFBB Figure competitor within the next 3 – 5 years.

5. Please describe a typical day for you. What is your daily routine like?

Wow, a typical day would be cardio at 7:30am, go into work at 10:00am. Leave work between 5:00 – 7:00pm. Train in the evening after work. Go home and be with my family and play with my puppy.

6. Please describe your normal diet. How do you eat to stay in shape?

My normal diet consists of 6 small meals. Balanced out with protein, carbs and fats. I eat about every three hours. Meal #1 is breakfast, which usually is oatmeal mixed with protein powder and almond butter for essential fats. Meal #2 is a protein shake. Meal #3 is lunch, which would be fish such as tilapia with 1/4 cup brown rice and green veggie. Meal #4 is another protein shake. Meal #5 (dinner) is usually chicken and a salad with a vinaigrette dressing. Meal #6 is a time-released protein shake right before bed.

7. What is your training routine like?

Training varies if I am getting ready for a competition. Right now this is my off-season so I train 4 days a week. I will lift heavy (for me) and do only 6-8 reps. This is to build more muscle and I will do cardio in the morning 3-4 days a week. When I am getting ready for a figure competition I train with a little lighter weight with more reps to sculpt the muscle, and add on 2 more days of cardio.

8. What supplements do you use?

Supplementation plays a big role in having a toned physique. I use glutamine, which is an amino acid that helps muscle recovery and muscle soreness. I use 2 different protein powders - one for day and one for night. Maxpro is a great day shake; it is very low in calories and low in sugar and carbs. My night shake is called High 5, which again is a time-released protein. I use CLA, which helps in building lean muscle and losing bodyfat. I take BCAA’s as well for my amino acid needs. Plus EFA’s in a pill form for added essential fatty acids.

9. How do you motivate yourself to get/stay in shape?

I motivate myself to stay in shape by setting a short term and a long-term goal. By doing that it holds me accountable to follow through.

10. What are a few of your favorite fitness and health-related web sites?

Some of my favorite websites:

www.bodysport.com - this site is great for finding out the latest news in the fitness industry

www.brinkzone.com - this site has articles about some of the latest supplementation and also competitors

www.fitnessmodelcentre.com - this site is great for fitness models to be hired directly instead of through an agent

11. What tips would you give to someone who wanted to get into the fitness modeling (or fitness competition) industry?

If someone is interested in becoming a fitness model, the advice I would give is market, market, and market yourself. If someone is interested in competing I would do some research first of different organizations to see what that organization is looking for. For example very muscular or not so muscular.

12. If someone you knew asked you how to lose weight and get into shape quickly, what would you tell them?

The best advice I could give someone who is trying to lose weight is to eat smaller portions and more often. With busy schedules today people tend to forget to eat and end up eating a big dinner. Also to change their eating habits. I believe there is no such thing as a diet. It should become a lifestyle. That is the difference between a diet that has failed and the success of maintaining a slimmer physique.

13. What do you feel differentiates you from other people in your field?

I believe what differentiates me from others in my field is that I know what it’s like to be overweight. I also know what it’s like lose that weight and keep it off!! I feel women can relate to me a little easier because I have been there.

14. Is there anything else you’d like to say?

I would love to add that if anyone is interested to learn more about me they can visit my website at www.sarahmalone.com I want to thank Jamie for the interview and I hope that everyone out there accomplishes their goals!! Be fit, Be happy and never give up on your dreams!!
