Fitness Model Interview:Shana Martin |
The Interview: 1. What's your background? How did you get started in the fitness industry? I was a gymnast my entire life and thus built a strong strength base. After posting some pictures on a Website, I was contacted by Kenny Kassel and flown out to New York City to do a shoot. My senior year in high school I became the youngest fitness competitor to compete at the Fitness Extravaganza in New Jersey. And the rest is history!
I honestly think my biggest accomplishment is yet to come. My college track career is finally over and I am now able to dedicate most of my time to fitness!
Far from it! Although it would make a hella fun full time job, I am still very new to the field. I graduate the University of Wisconsin-Madison in December 2002 with a degree in Kinesiology. From there I am going to Connecticut to coach track at Wesleyan University, as well as work part time as a personal trainer. At the end of the track season, I plan to come back to Madison and find a more permanent job. Keep checking my Website http://www.shanamartin.com for my progress! I also have my many other activities listed on there.
In terms of fitness, my immediate goal is to get my name out. Living
in Wisconsin has been very hard on my fitness career...there is almost
nothing available! Once I move out east, I look forward to getting a
high lever choreographer and hopefully putting together some awesome
routines!
Holy cow, it totally depends on the time of year, but I will give you
my typical day during this academic year. During the summer (Triathlon and logrolling season) things change around
a bit:
Okay I am going to be perfectly honest here. NOBODY should be on the type of diet I am...there are so many easier ways to do it. When I am not dieting for competition, I eat like crap. My rationale: I was raised by my father and never learned to cook. Pizza, ice cream, stuff like that is very typical. About three months out of competition, I change my diet completely. This takes a LOT of motivation. Because I had nobody to learn from around here, I basically figured things out on my own with some help from Kenny. My diet consisted of Oatmeal, rice cakes, special K, veggies, eggbeaters, Chicken, and some seafood. I would have butterless popcorn or sugar free popsicles for snacks. I'm sure there is a better way to do this, but I have yet to learn how to cook. That is my next venture out of college.
My training routine is pretty complicated due to the many sports I do during different times of the year. For my lifting, I break it up into at least three times a week: chest and back/legs/bis, tris, and shoulders. I usually keep things to three sets of 8-10 reps, but vary it quite often. Cardio varies as well. When I am training for logrolling, most of my cardio comes from just that. During triathlon season (which sometimes overlaps with fitness season) I do a LOT of running, biking, and swimming. Working on my fitness routine also adds to my cardio. Not to mention teaching aerobics...that helps too. ?
Creatine when I am not dieting and a Thermogenic during the diet. I take a multivitamin all year round.
I am going to attach something I wrote earlier this year. It is a bit lengthy, but really discusses my overall motivation for exercise. Excerpts from this can probably be used for other questions as well. Physical activity and sport has been a major part of my life, my entire life. Hard times, competition, social reasons, physical appearance, and money are all factors that have kept me so involved over the years. Although different factors were more influential at different times, it all boils down to one thing: being physically active makes me feel good. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy my journey through a life of exercise and sport. Click here to read Shana's story

Be ready for some intense dieting!
Well, this is my line of work, but rather than writing out a long program, I will say this. It’s all about how much you take in (food) vs. how much you expend (BMR and daily exercise). Find a cardiovascular activity you enjoy, do it regularly and supplement that with a basic weight-training program.
My diverse background of athletics. I have yet to meet another fitness girl that is also a lumberjack.
Visit my Website!!! I am totally available for modeling! Contact info is on my Website. Stay tuned to ESPN’s Great Outdoor Games for some great lumberjack coverage!
