Fitness Model Interview:

Tracey Hartley

The Interview:

1. What's your background? How did you get started in the fitness industry?

I became interested in fitness competitions after working out with my personal trainer, who competed. We made a promise that I would one day compete. It gave me a goal to work toward and I love a challenge. I began working out in the end of November 1999, because I was over 214 lbs and well above my ideal weight. Also, my self-esteem was way down and I was fatigued all the time. In August 2001 I reached my goal weight and decided to keep my promise. I began training in September and did Women's Tri-Fitness in November to get my feet wet and learn a little about the fitness world. I had a blast and made the cut to go to Nationals which was a dream come true, yet also a challenge. My self esteem had gotten a huge boost but to get on stage in a swimsuit for a show that would be televised in more than 300,000 homes was scary. I DID IT! When I walked on stage I had already won because I had gained so much confidence in myself I felt like a million bucks. I am not sure how many of the other competitors can say that they know what it feels like to be overweight or better known as "FAT". In March of 2002 I received a letter that let me know I had qualified to participate in Fitness Universe in Miami Florida. I was thrilled. All of this basically opened new doors for me as a role model, spokeswomen and fitness model.

2. What do you feel is your biggest fitness-related accomplishment?

I believe that my biggest fitness-related accomplishment is living day to day. Due to my hard work and dedication to the fitness world I now lead a healthier and fuller life. No matter what competition entered or won nor modeling could come close to the feeling inside of self accomplishment of being healthier and overcoming weight problems.

3. Is fitness modeling/competition your full-time job? If not, what else do you do?

No! Fitness modeling/competition is not my full-time job. Not by a long shot. Even though it does take up a lot of my time I am currently a full time student studying Elementary Education. I am also a personal trainer. When I have spare time I model and compete. I wish I could do this full time however it is not financially possible at this time. I also spend a lot of time keeping up my website, playing with my three year old son and trying to be the best wife and mom possible.

4. What are your immediate and long-term goals?

My immediate goals are to stay focused on school and my son. My long term goals are to take my fitness to a different level and make a career out of it. I hope to motivate people to shape up, be healthy and love themselves. I love to do print modeling and continue to compete to keep myself on track.

8. What supplements do you use?

Protein powder -- Chocolate Isopure
Glutamine - help with sugar craving and muscle repair
Creatine - only when competing, helps me to not lose too much weight/muscle while dieting
Hydroxycut - only if I need energy help, not like bottle says. I take this on days that I have several exercise classes or clients that I have to work with, or if i am just very tired.

I believe these supplements help me but they are not in any way a substitution for good nutrition or hard work.

9. How do you motivate yourself to get/stay in shape?

I use competition as my motivator. This gives me a goal to aim for. I also have many people that I speak with on a daily basis that expect the best from me. One main factor in motivation is Fans, I get many emails of compliments that really shows me my work is paying off.

11. What tips would you give to someone who wanted to get into the fitness modeling (or fitness competition) industry?

Start today! Train hard, eat right and stay focused. Make sure you are having fun! The fitness/modeling industry is constantly looking for something new. If you have the desire, set a goal and strive to meet it.

12. If someone you knew asked you how to lose weight and get into shape quickly, what would you tell them?

Nothing is going to happen over night. Drink a lot of water. This will help flush the bad stuff out. No fried food, no sugar and no refined flour. Eat 5 or more small meals through out the day, approx. every 3 hrs. Eat for nutrition not taste. Do some type of cardio for 30 minutes 5 times a week and always take the longest walking route (park in last parking spot at grocery store so you have to walk).

13. What do you feel differentiates you from other people in your field?

I believe I am a unique person. I came into the industry for myself not money. I help any one I can in hopes of motivating others to get into shape. I take the time to read and answer all email and love the fitness part of my life.
